In music, a “tenuto” mark signifies that a note should be sustained for its whole value. For the past 34 years, this award has been given to individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to music education — enabling young people to live their lives to their fullest value.

We are proud to announce this year’s recipients:

SARA GAZAREK

Jazz legends around the world and throughout the industry have recognized Sara as holding the keys to the future of this art form. Her vocal stylings are contemporary, while still paying homage to the greats who have come before her.

For the past three years, Sara has headlined evening concerts, provided workshops, and hosted Jazz in the Schools clinics. Her uplifting, inspirational spirit has made her a favorite among student participants, and fellow guest artists alike. Before becoming a professional musician, Sara attended this jazz festival while a student at Roosevelt High School (in Seattle, WA). She frequently shares with student participants: “Just a few years ago, I was sitting — quite literally — right where you are sitting.” This special connection makes her words of wisdom all the more relevant for aspiring young musicians.

The Edmonds Community College/Friends of Frank DeMiero Jazz Festival is proud to acknowledge Sara with the Tenuto Award, for all that she has done — and all that she will do in the years ahead — to inspire the next generation of jazz musicians.
